“Pictures Are Worth A Thousand Words”. Great people have agreed to the fact that pictures speak a universal language. We all know that representing data in a pictorial manner makes it easy for the reader to get a grasp of it.

In Microsoft Word, we can insert a picture in our document in the following two manners:

From the Clip Art Gallery

From another file

Inserting pictures from the Clip Art Gallery

We can use the Clip Art Gallery to view a variety of pictures, photographs, sounds, and video clips. It is also possible for us to insert these objects in our document from the Clip Art Gallery. Microsoft Corporation provides Clip Art Gallery along with the Microsoft Office package of which MS-Word is a part.

In order to insert a picture from the Clip Art Gallery, we should follow the steps given below:

Position the cursor at the location where the picture from the Clip Art Gallery is to be inserted.

Thereafter, select Insert->Picture->Clip Art.

We can find that the various pictures have been grouped under certain broad topics. We can select any of the following topics and a screen will appear with multiple Clip Arts in that particular topic. Suppose if we have selected the topic Animals, the following screen will appear.

We can click on the any of the picture in the above figure that is considered appropriate

On doing so, a pictorial menu appears from where we can insert the picture on the document.

In order to insert the ClipArt we have to click on the Insert Clip option

Inserting picture from another file
Let us say, that we have drawn a picture using the Paint application provided by Windows. Now, we want to insert this picture in a Word document. However, in such a case, the Clip Art Gallery will be of not much help to us.

The steps that we are supposed to follow to insert a picture in these circumstances are enumerated below:

1. Place the cursor in the position where the picture is to be inserted

2. Then, select Insert->Picture->From File

3. Insert Picture dialogue box will be displayed

In the Look in box of the Insert Picture dialog window, specify the drive or the folder where the file containing the picture that is to be insert in the document is located.

On locating the required picture, either double-click on that file or click on the Insert button and the picture will be inserted in our document.

Brand Promotion, the ever cherished tradition of initiating, reinitiating and retaining a brand, whereas Search Engine Marketing or SEM is the recent trend of marketing your brand on the web. Let us try to analyze them properly and try to find out the synchronization between brand promotion and search engine marketing.

Whenever you develop a website, you prefer to use it as your brand identity and want to find the wider reach.

You try to make your website visible to the maximum possible visitors and accordingly become keen to promote your website in the market place of Internet. Search being the 2nd largest activity on the Internet, promotion of a website primarily depends upon the ranking of your website in various search engines.

If we want to look back to the traditional ways of advertisements, we ought to define the 5M factors very clearly and be focussed to achieve a pre-defined target of each campaign. These factors are Money, Message, Mission, Media and Mass. With the invent of Internet, most of the advertisers have been akin to use Internet as their prime media for branding.

The significant advantage of Internet as a media is it reaches a wider mass in the fastest possible way and the money factor comes down drastically as change in any web page costs much lesser than any other prevalent print or elctronics media.

The message can also be changed even during any ongoing campaign at ease. The zazzy appearance of your web presence enhances the glory of your brand and it reatins longer among the target segments.

The innumerable emerging brands justify that a brand has to penetrate the shell of the customer to convert the subdued desire to their basic need.

If anyone notices the emerging services and products in the recent past, he will be able to realize the same. Experts say, a simultaneous brand promotion in various media builds up a phenomenal impact and the presence of any brand in the most used media helps the brand to find a comparatively permamnet identity in the people’s mind set. This is also true that a major segment of people use Internet on a daily basis for one reason or the other.

If we want to compare the fundamental philosohpy of the concepts of billboards, wall paintings, hoardings, posters etc, we will find an analogy with the concept of SEM.

Both SEM and Brand Promotion activities aim at making a vibrant presence by increasing their visibility.

The way you need to pay a premium price for placing your billboard in the most lucrative road-crossing, you need to pay equally a premium price to advertise your website or brand on the websites, which draws a high amount of traffic.

The end objective of both SEM and Brand promotion remains the same as both aims at promotion of brand equity and both tries to foster the awareness, so that it leaves a long lasting effect among the customers or world at large. If we consider Internet is one of the media like television channels, print media etc. then SEM becomes a subset of the larger set brand promotion.

The overwhelming popularity of Internet may turn many ups and downs in the advertising world in the near future as a quantum jump in advertising budget is speculated all over the world in the coming days

Everybody is aware that project management is an integral part of business management and perhaps the key to business success. What is normally noticed in very small companies that the proprietor hardly bothers about project management concerns as he is only interested on return on investment.

Business management aims at success of a project primarily for finance and then for building relations. Situations arise when the level of interest for customer satisfaction becomes so high that the project management issues get the back seat.

The problem arises when the business management goals look at the project as the step for long term business relationship and tries to meet every expectation of the customer irrespective of the financial and time constraints.

The dreaded urge at times conflict even the basic priorities of project management.

The best solution is that the project team should start with a clearly stated specification and give a realistic deadline. A very common phenomena is changes in the project specifications, the PM should give a deep thought before raising the impact on time and cost to the top forum and restrains himself from any unrealistic deadlines.

Technology marvels have blessed us a lot and given us a lot of comfort and security. On the other hand New technology is always highly risk prone when you apply it in a project. The first problem arises is the uncertainty as you are perhaps applying a technology which is not time tested. Some major giants release a Beta version at the initial stage with a lot of glittering commitments and in many cases it has been observed that there is a gap between the reality and commitment.

This not only increases the risk of the project management, but at times, it can lead to a catastrophe, where you might have to scrap the entire project and start afresh.

We live in an age, where new technologies emerge every fortnight, and you like to apply them in your running or coming projects, which is NOT yet proven or even stability has NOT been ensured.

New technologies create another mess in your home front. As the technology has just emerged, neither your people master the technology before applying it, NOR you get good trainers, as the trainer might also be just picking it up. Even if you have the in house skill, the number gets limited to one or two, which brings another risk for a project management, which is person dependency. The market witnessed a similar problems, when Oracle launched OAS for the first time mainly in the Asian counterparts.

People have got the habit of running after newer technologies irrespective of the platform or environment. There is a sustainable amount of risk, the new technology may not have an intermingling relationship with the environment, which may really fall flat on your face.

We conclude like, we must welcome new technologies, but we must give it a time before applying it in projects.

Even a kid of 8 years knows that the customer is an asset as he fills your bank A/C with dollars and any new customer is a fortune as this is the indication for growth of business. On the other hand Customer is that entity, which needs ‘handle with care’.

The biggest disadvantage for a New customer is that his pulse is still unknown to you. As you had never worked with him earlier you are completely unaware of his likings and dislikings, which play a crucial role for determining the success of the project. At times, the customer changes specs very frequently, which makes your PM plan Topsy turvy.

As this is the first project with you, a tendency of getting everything on the earth becomes apparent at times.

The Project Manager and the Customer relationship manager should be enough tactful to handle such request and be firm but polite in bringing reality to the fore.

There are some customers, who prefer to remain mum through out the project and may be after completion, they will come up with their issues. We call them silent customers. The major drawback is as they hardly they pass on any comments, you hardly come to realize what they want or where do you vary?

The best way of handling such customers is interaction through clearly specified documents. Send the document after completion of each module and get his feedback.

You may be a bit lenient, but insist on a specific time period for receiving the feedback.

Any business house is always concerned about the most important customers. As the company classifies the most important customers to a very limited number, the handling becomes a bit easier. The tendency of frequent change may obscure some of the fundamental philosophy of your PM plan, but as a Project Manager, you need to be cautious.

As the important customers draw attention of various top notches of the organization, the pressure has got a tremendous ripple effect even among the team and project manager. At times, the effect becomes adverse and even detrimental.

A sincere look into the issues by the Project Manager and raising of issues in the correct forum in correct time may save a lot of hazard!

SEO, the buzzword of Internet era, has given enough exposure for research and experiment for the web professionals in various forms. As the proven fact is that Search Engines emphasize significantly on content, so the efforts towards SEO driven content have taken the pillioneer’s seat.

Let us explain, what we term as SEO driven content. Every web professional is aware that keywords play a vital role in ranking.

So, for obvious reasons, people have started writing content, where the keyword gets repeated even without making sense. In the world of Search Engine Optimization, this is popularly known as keyword stuffing.

Some smarter guys have gone one step ahead, where they have started camouflaging the keywords in the content or even beyond the content in a most unethical manner. They use to hide them by color ballgame.

Search Engine crawlers, might have taken a little bit time to realize the reality, but gradually they have become smart enough to trace such camouflaging keywords. Naturally they have started penalizing such websites or web pages.

So, SEO driven content like unethical ways of keyword stuffing do not yield any positive result, rather they lead to the risk of penalty.

CSS Or Cascading Style Sheet has become a buzzword in today’s web world. People even without knowing much about CSS demands their websites to become CSS based. But why is CSS required?

The primary advantage of CSS is that it uses the class concept. So, once you declare a class, it gets automatically replicated on all the relevant pages as well as any change in any of the declared class in CSS will affect all the web pages, which have instantiated that class. So, the concept of reuse becomes highly pertinent as well as advantageous also.

People adapt some peculiar ways for CSS. Like, web page is designed say using dreamweaver, the classes created by that software is grouped together and placed in another document with an extension of .CSS. We call it a quack method.

What one needs to do is to frame the entire design in the beginning and then declare the required classes. Dont worry! You can change the color, font or anything of that class at any point of time.
